Welcoming a puppy into your home is a joyful and life-changing experience — and at Fernwood Pointers, we believe it should be built on mutual trust, transparency, and care.
Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or a seasoned GSP lover, our process is designed to guide you every step of the way.

Here’s exactly what to expect when adopting a puppy from Fernwood.

Step 1: Reach Out and Introduce Yourself

The first step is simple — contact us to express interest in a current or upcoming litter.
We’ll ask a few questions to get to know you better, including:

  • Your experience with dogs
  • Your household and lifestyle
  • What you’re looking for in a GSP

This isn’t a test — it’s a conversation. Our goal is to ensure a great match between you and your future puppy.

Step 2: The Application

If we both feel it’s a good fit, we’ll invite you to complete a short adoption application.
This helps us:

  • Understand your expectations
  • Learn about your home environment
  • Begin thinking about puppy matches (temperament, energy level, etc.)

We believe in placing the right puppy with the right family — not just first-come, first-served.

Step 3: Deposit and Reservation

Approved families will be invited to place a reservation deposit to hold a spot in the litter pick order.
This deposit goes toward your final puppy price and confirms your commitment.

We’ll also:

  • Confirm estimated pickup timeframes
  • Add you to our private update list for litter news

Step 4: Puppy Updates + Milestones

Once the puppies arrive, we’ll send regular updates — including:

  • Photos and videos
  • Developmental milestones
  • Sneak peeks into their personalities

You’ll get a front-row seat to your puppy’s first weeks of life — and we’ll begin refining our match recommendations based on your preferences and lifestyle.

Step 5: Puppy Matching and Final Selection

At around 6–7 weeks old, we’ll begin finalizing matches based on:

  • Puppy temperament and energy level
  • Your goals (family companion, hiking buddy, field potential, etc.)
  • Puppy pick order

We’ll help guide you through the process — and ensure you’re confident in your new family member.

Step 6: Go-Home Day!

At 8 weeks old, puppies are ready to join their forever homes.
We’ll schedule your pickup time and prepare your go-home kit, which includes:

  • Health and vaccination records
  • Starter food
  • Scented blanket or item from our home
  • Tips for a smooth first night

We’re always available for questions — even long after go-home day has passed.
