Living in Upstate New York’s North Country means having some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the world — and if you have a German Shorthaired Pointer (or any energetic pup), you know how important it is to find trails and parks where your dog can stretch their legs, sniff to their heart’s content, and burn off that GSP energy!

Whether you’re based in Potsdam, NY or just visiting the area, here are some of our favorite local spots to enjoy with your furry companion.

1. Stone Valley Trail (Colton, NY)

Dog-Friendly Level: High
Trail Type: Moderate wooded trails along the Raquette River

This scenic trail system offers beautiful river views, cascading waterfalls, and well-marked paths.
Dogs must be leashed, but there’s plenty of space for adventure, swimming spots, and photo opportunities along the way.
It’s a perfect spot for energetic GSPs who love water and rugged terrain.

2. Lehman Park (Potsdam, NY)

Dog-Friendly Level: High
Trail Type: Easy walking trails and open green space

Located right in the heart of Potsdam, Lehman Park is ideal for shorter outings.
Enjoy shady strolls along the river, toss a ball in the wide-open fields, or just relax with your dog by your side.
It’s a great starter park for young puppies getting used to walks and new experiences.

3. Postwood Park (Hannawa Falls, NY)

Dog-Friendly Level: Moderate to High
Trail Type: Sandy beaches, short nature trails

While Postwood is mainly known for swimming, it’s also a wonderful spot for early morning walks with dogs (before the beach crowd arrives).
In the off-season, it’s a hidden gem for peaceful shoreline walks with your GSP.

Tip: Bring a towel — GSPs and water are a natural combination!

4. Clarkson Woods (Potsdam, NY)

Dog-Friendly Level: Moderate
Trail Type: Nature preserve trails, moderately rugged

This quiet trail network is perfect for adventurous dogs and owners looking for a more rustic experience.
You’ll find narrow paths, wooden bridges, and lots of natural scent trails to engage your dog’s nose.

Note: Keep dogs on leash, and be respectful of posted conservation rules.

5. Higley Flow State Park (Colton, NY)

Dog-Friendly Level: High
Trail Type: Extensive trail system, lakeside access

For a full-day outing, Higley Flow can’t be beat.
Miles of wooded trails wind around lakes, streams, and open fields.
There are even dedicated picnic areas where you and your dog can take a well-earned break after exploring.

Bonus: In winter, Higley is a magical spot for snowshoeing with dogs!

Tips for Hiking and Walking with Your Dog in the North Country

  • Leash laws: Always check trail-specific rules (some areas require leashes at all times).
  • Tick prevention: Use vet-approved preventatives — ticks are active much of the year here.
  • Bring water and a portable bowl: Stay hydrated, especially in summer.
  • Practice trail etiquette: Keep your dog under control, pick up waste, and respect wildlife.

Your German Shorthaired Pointer will love every minute — whether bounding through the woods, splashing in streams, or simply soaking up the fresh Adirondack air.

At Fernwood Pointers, we believe an active life is the best life for a GSP — and here in the North Country, there’s no shortage of adventures waiting just outside your door.
